Mixed-metal Zr/Ti MIL-173 porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks as efficient photocatalysts towards solar-driven overall water splitting

A new synthesis strategy towards a stable titanium containing porphyrinic MOF was developed in the LMI. This porous material is named MIL-173(Zr/Ti) and its composition allows to combine the optical properties of the porphyrin (photosensitizer) and the photocatalytic properties of the inorganic semiconductor. This MOF was designed for photocatalytic applications, it is successfully performing the overall water splitting, without the addition of any sacrificial electron or cocatalyst and under solar light. This study is a result of an international collaboration between France (LMI, CIMP and MBD groups), Spain ( Universitat Politècnica de València) and Ireland (University College Cork) and it paves the way for the development of efficient MOF-based materials as photocatalyst for the solar-driven overall water splitting.
